The Best Persimmon Soap (2026): 5 Bars Compared for Nonenal Odor
Persimmon tannin soap is the one product people keep recommending for the stale, greasy smell that can show up after 40. The bars differ more than you'd think, so here's how five of them compare on price, scent, ingredients and guarantee.
Please read first: The Soap Digest is owned by the same company that makes TanniBar. We rank it first and we earn money when you buy it. Every other brand here is linked without payment, and we try to describe each one fairly. Check the facts for yourself. Full disclosure.
Why persimmon soap, and what “nonenal” actually means
In 2001, researchers at Shiseido analyzed body odor from people aged 26 to 75 and found a compound called 2-nonenal only in the participants aged 40 and over. They linked it to the way skin oils oxidize with age. People describe the smell as greasy, grassy, dusty or “like a grandparent’s closet”. It collects where skin is oiliest: the nape of the neck, behind the ears, the scalp and the upper back. It also transfers readily to pillowcases and collars.
Ordinary soap and deodorant don’t reliably shift it. That’s why Japanese kakishibu (fermented persimmon tannin) soaps got popular: tannins are large plant polyphenols known for binding other molecules. On Reddit, in communities like r/Menopause and r/AskWomenOver60, persimmon soap is one of the most frequently recommended fixes for “old person smell”. It also comes up often in “it didn’t work for me” threads.
“I tried a lovely pineapple exfoliant but the smell came back the next day.”
How we compared these bars
We didn’t run a lab test, and no one here has one to sell you. We compared each bar on facts you can verify: the brand’s own ingredient list, price, bar size, scent, country of origin and guarantee terms, all checked on the date above. We also read hundreds of public comments from people who’ve used these soaps. We weighted four things:
- Persimmon tannin as a named ingredient, not a vague “persimmon scent”.
- No added scent, because perfume sits on top of an odor rather than removing it, and it’s the #1 complaint from scent-sensitive users.
- Gentleness, since tannin is astringent and skin over 50 has less oil to spare.
- Value and risk: price per bar, and whether the guarantee makes you post the product back.
Disclosure again, because it matters: we make the #1 bar. Judge the facts for yourself.
Don’t have time for all five? The short version: if you want no scent at all, choose a fragrance-free bar. If you want the cheapest possible test, try a Japanese drugstore bar. And whatever you buy, use it the right way, because most “it didn’t work” stories come down to technique.

How to choose a persimmon soap (a quick buyer’s checklist)

- Check that persimmon tannin is actually listed. Look for persimmon tannin, kakishibu or Diospyros kaki in the ingredients. Several listings sell “persimmon” soaps whose descriptions don’t match the product.
- Decide how you feel about scent. Scented bars (Pelican, Natrulo) are pleasant for many people, but they add a smell. Fragrance-free bars are the safer choice for shared bathrooms, migraines, MCAS or a partner who dislikes perfume.
- Mind your skin. If you have eczema, psoriasis or very dry skin, pick a bar with glycerin, shea or other conditioning oils, and patch-test first. Reddit threads include reports of rashes and stinging, especially on delicate areas.
- Work out the real price. A cheap bar that turns to mush in a wet dish can cost more per month than a hard-milled bar. Keep any bar dry between showers. A mesh soap-saver bag helps.
- Read the guarantee. Some brands refund only if you post the soap back, which few people bother doing for a $20 bar.
- Buy from the brand or a reputable importer. Look-alike and counterfeit listings are common on big marketplaces.
Getting results: the three habits that matter
- Target the right spots. Neck, behind the ears, scalp and hairline, upper back and chest matter more than armpits for this particular smell.
- Give it time and wash the fabrics. The odor lingers in pillowcases, collars, cardigans and car seats. If you don’t wash those too, you’ll keep smelling the old smell and think the soap failed. See our guide to checking whether you have nonenal odor.
- Don’t scrub delicate skin. Use your hands or a soft cloth. Several users describe stinging after using a mesh pouch on sensitive areas.

Persimmon soap FAQ
What is the best persimmon soap?
It depends on what matters to you. If you want no added scent at all, look for a bar sold as fragrance-free, like TanniBar (our product) or Mirai Clinical's unscented version. If you mainly want to test whether persimmon soap helps before spending much, a Japanese drugstore bar such as Pelican costs a few dollars. Our table above compares price, scent, origin and guarantee side by side.
Does persimmon soap really work for old person smell?
Many users report that it does, especially on the neck, behind the ears and on the scalp. The clinical evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests. Researchers have linked 2-nonenal to age-related body odor, but we found no peer-reviewed human trial of persimmon soap itself. Read our evidence review.
How long does it take persimmon soap to work?
Some people notice a difference after the first shower. Others take one to three weeks of daily use, partly because the smell also lives in pillowcases, collars and upholstery. Wash those at the same time. See how to use persimmon soap.
Is persimmon soap safe for sensitive skin?
Persimmon tannin is astringent, and some users report dryness, rashes or stinging, especially on thin or broken skin. Patch-test first, keep it off mucous membranes, and moisturize afterwards. Stop and talk to a clinician if irritation persists.
Where can I buy persimmon soap?
Mostly online: brand websites, Amazon and Japanese import shops. Some Asian grocery stores carry Japanese bars. Look-alike listings are common, so check the ingredient list for persimmon tannin (kakishibu, Diospyros kaki).
